Abodo® Vaaro® Cladding & Lining Perth WA

Abodo Vaaro Fire

What is Vaaro Fire?

Abodo Vaaro Fire is an extreme performance feature timber for exterior cladding, screening and interior lining. It is an ultra-durable timber with fire retardant properties, tested in Australia to AS 3959:2018 BAL-29 and AS 5637.1:2015 Group 1*. For specifiers, that means BAL-29 timber cladding and Group 1 lining from the same timber.

Abodo’s Vaaro is the only ultra-durable timber with fire retardant properties, available as a complete coated and tested product range – all from one trusted manufacturer**.

Each board starts as FSC®-C010962 certified New Zealand Radiata pine from rapidly renewable plantations. Abodo heat treats it at 230°C, vacuum-pressure impregnates a resin-based fire retardant through the full cross-section, then cures it in a kiln to fix the resin in the wood cells. It gives architects an alternative to the old growth timbers traditionally used in high fire risk applications.

Where can Vaaro Fire be used?

Vaaro Fire works outside and in. As exterior cladding it is suitable for use in AS 3959 Bushfire Attack Levels up to and including BAL-29*. Inside, it has been tested and achieved Group 1 for wall and ceiling panelling*.

That suits commercial, multi-residential and architect-designed projects, and homes in bushfire-prone areas assessed up to BAL-29 that need BAL 29 cladding without giving up real timber. For sites with no fire requirement, Abodo Vulcan® Cladding is the sibling range.

Frequently Asked Questions

BAL-29 is one of the Bushfire Attack Levels in AS 3959, the Australian standard for building in bushfire-prone areas. A bushfire assessment sets each site’s BAL from its expected exposure to radiant heat and embers. Vaaro Fire has been tested and achieved up to BAL-29 according to AS 3959 as exterior cladding*.
It depends on the site’s Bushfire Attack Level. Vaaro Fire is suitable for use in AS 3959 Bushfire Attack Levels up to and including BAL-29*, so it’s an option for sites assessed up to BAL-29 where you want real timber. For higher ratings, talk to your building certifier or fire engineer.
That depends on your site and your building. A bushfire assessment sets the site’s BAL, and the building’s classification and design add further requirements. Your building certifier or fire engineer can confirm what applies. Where timber is part of the design, Vaaro Fire is tested to BAL-29 for cladding and Group 1 for panelling*.
No. The resin-based fire retardant is vacuum-pressure impregnated through the full cross-section of each board, then heat cured to fix it in the wood cells. It doesn’t rely on a surface layer. The BAL-29 result covers uncoated and Protector™-coated boards, while the Group 1 interior result was achieved uncoated.
Vaaro Fire is highly leach resistant. A thermosetting resin locks the fire retardant into the timber’s cell structure, and fire performance was tested after accelerated weathering. The fire retardant performance is expected to hold for the service life of the timber, though long-term exterior fire performance is not warranted. Full test detail is in the Product Guide.
You can cut boards to length on site. If you install them uncoated outside, seal exposed end grain with an approved end grain sealer. Re-machining is limited to 4mm – up to 1mm off the face and 3mm off the back, keeping 18mm nominal thickness. Rip sawing, thicknessing and planing need authorisation from Abodo or its distributor.
Yes. Vaaro Fire has been tested and achieved Group 1 according to AS 5637.1 for interior panelling*, using uncoated vertical grain boards. It meets Super E0 formaldehyde limits, passes VOC emissions testing and contains no added heavy metals, halogens or sulphates.
Abodo Protector™ is the only exterior coating fully tested with Vaaro Fire. For lower maintenance, choose Protector Patina, White or Bare, which let the timber silver off naturally. You can also leave it uncoated. Other stains or paints may need compatibility and further fire testing before you specify them.
Vaaro Fire carries a 40 Year Durability Warranty (subject to warranty conditions) against fungal decay. It achieved Durability Class 1 under EN 350, with an indicative service life of 40-plus years as exterior cladding. The warranty conditions are in the Product Guide, and our team can walk you through them.

* Abodo’s Vaaro has been tested to and has achieved AS/NZS 3837:1998 Type A and ISO 9705:2003 Group 1-S (NZ), AS 3959:2018 BAL29 and AS 5637.1:2015 Group 1 (AU), B-s2, d0 (LVG) / B-s1, d0 (Flatsawn) (EN 13501-1:2018) DRF EXT INT1 INT2 (EN 16755:2017) (UK+EU), and ASTM E84 Class A (USA) fire compliance standards.
