Treated Pine (Structural H3 & H4)

Treat yourself to longer lasting timber

Treated pine is highly regarded for its strength and longevity. The various treatments applied to pine help safeguard it from termite attack and decay.

In its rawest form, pine plantation timber is a wood species with a low level of natural durability. It’s easy to forget that pine is actually a softwood and does not have pores. Without kiln drying or applying a preservative (treatment), pine can split, crack or rot. To ensure you get the longest life out of your project, always use treated pine.

The right treated pine for your project

There are various timber treatment products and processes used in Australia. The most common preservative products include:

CCA, ACQ and CuAz – these are water-borne preservatives that permeate the wood.

LOSPs – meaning Light Organic Solvent-borne Preservatives, these are mixed with a light solvent and applied.

Treatments are distinguished by their H level. H1 is the lowest (which is rarely, if ever used), while H6 is suitable for timber that is exposed to seawater for prolonged periods (such as jetty piles).

Austim carries a large range of H3 treated pine which is suitable for outside, above ground use. We also stock H4 treated pine posts, which are suitable for outside, in-ground applications.

Is treated pine suitable for decking boards?

Plantation pine is naturally fast growing. This means the timber has a greater tendency to ‘move’ with changes in environmental conditions like temperature and humidity.

While treated pine timber is a smart choice for a decking subframe, be aware that decking boards made from pine can potentially twist or bow when exposed to temperature changes. Consider this if you are thinking of using pine boards for your next decking project.

Austim stocks a large range of timber decking and composite decking boards that are stylish, durable and guaranteed to stay in shape. Fill in the enquiry form above to get a quote or ask our team which timber decking is best suited to your project.

What you should know about CCA treated timber

You may have read about CCA (copper chrome arsenate) timber being banned in certain countries. Perth buyers can relax – it’s still OK to use CCA treated timber in a variety of traditional applications. This also means you don’t have to remove existing structures made from CCA treated timber.

Are there any restrictions on using CCA treated timber?

Yes, under an agreement with the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicine Authority (APVMA), the timber industry has imposed voluntary restrictions on the sale of timber treated with CCA for certain uses:

    • Children’s play equipment
    • External seating
    • Garden furniture
    • Picnic tables
    • Domestic timber decking boards
    • Handrails

In addition, CCA treated products must be individually and legibly marked with the words ‘Treated with copper chrome arsenate’ to the first point of use.
